It’s Never Too Late to Pursue Your Dreams

The Degree Completion Program is blessed to have a variety of non-traditional students pursuing Bachelor Degrees in the cohort classes that meet one night a week. We have business owners and professionals, ministry workers, stay-at-home moms, retired veterans and law enforcement, and many more. The programs offered by ACU through the Degree Completion Program give our adult students the opportunity to gain skills and training that benefits them both in the work they are doing now as well as with the careers they seek for the future. One of our students shares her experience with the Degree Completion Program this way: I’m so thankful that the DCP exists! As a busy mom of two little ones, the cohort model has been a wonderful fit for me. I love that while the program is accelerated, it’s just one class at a time and one night a week.  Having the opportunity to learn alongside other adults in a small classroom setting has been so empowering and has been a faithful reminder to me that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. -Megan     Providing an opportunity for students like Megan to learn in a Christian community is what the Degree Completion Program is all about. Through the Eyes of an Adult Student

“I have the desire but not the ability…” My college journey was a long and arduous one.  It consisted of many starts and stops along the way. The road blocks were not intentional, but the priority of my family often made my education take a back seat to the needs and demands of life.  I use to say, “I had the desire but not the ability” to finish my degree due to the stresses of real priorities. On my birthday, my father-in-law included a newspaper advertisement of the ACU adult completion program in my birthday card as he knew at one time my heart’s desire was to complete my education. I tucked the newspaper clipping into my Bible, and there it stayed for a year. One day on my way to work, I heard a radio ad about this Degree Completion Program that was designed for the working adult and BONUS…. emphasized Christ as the center of their model. That night I pulled out the shelved article. It was the same program. I prayed about it for a week and then secretly decided I would call the number on the ad and just see what happened. The rest is history. In May 2013, I graduated Magna Cum Laude. During that time, I held a full time job, had two children in high school and supported a husband who was rebuilding his company and career. Most importantly, I had the opportunity to look out in the crowd on graduation day and see my two children look at me with pride as they watched their mama receive her college diploma. That...

Two Easy Tools to Improve your Writing

Written communication skills are necessary for students and professionals alike. Proper grammar and excellent word choice can go a long way. Here are two simple tools that anyone can implement to take their writing to the next level. 1) Word Frequency Counter Do you ever just have one of those great words that you tend to use over and over? I mean the word is great, right? So, wouldn’t it be great to use that word frequently? Thankfully, there’s an incredible on-line tool that can help eliminate the over usage of words. Check out the “Word Frequency Counter” from Write Words the next time you need to write anything professional, creative, or academic. This tool allows you to copy and paste text right onto their page and it will give you a count for every word in your text. 2) Synonyms/Thesaurus If the Word Frequency Counter shows that you are overusing words, you can go back over your text and find synonyms or different terms to use instead. The synonym feature in Microsoft Word is extremely helpful with this. By simply right-clicking on a word in my text and choosing “synonym”, I can see a list of alternative expressions. If I don’t find something I like, I can choose “Thesaurus” and more choices will appear. The Degree Completion Program at Arizona Christian University is committed to helping students succeed in all areas of their vocation. The biblically based courses address many other skills sought after by employers such as collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and problem solving. You can gain career-specific knowledge that will help you apply skills such as these in a...
Five Tips for Going Back to School

Five Tips for Going Back to School

Students returning to school after several years are often concerned about keeping up with academics. If you are an adult that has recently gone back to college to finish your degree or is contemplating going back to school, you are not alone! The Degree Completion Program at Arizona Christian University incorporates a course in the beginning of each of the degree programs to help adults sharpen their skills. No matter where you are in the process, however, these five tips will set you up for success and prepare you for becoming a college student as an adult learner: Develop a Support System. Pull together support from family and friends and ask them to pray you through each class and any times of struggle. Be patient with yourself. The more time you’ve spent away from school the more difficult it may be to feel comfortable. Adjust your schedule. Carve out an hour or two every day for reading and writing. Our favorite saying in the DCP office is “short-term sacrifice: long-term gain.” Make good use of on-line tools. Look for free resources on the internet that will help with study skills, grammar, and writing. Don’t be shy. The more you interact with others, the more comfortable you’ll feel and the more success you will have. This is your time. Own it. If I were to add a sixth tip it would be to reward yourself – and to reward yourself often. You are embarking on a good and noble adventure. Completing your degree as an adult is an incredible undertaking, be proud of what you’re doing, who you are, and...

A Veteran’s Testimony

The Degree Completion Program is ideal for veterans. ACU is authorized to certify DCP students who qualify for Veterans’ Benefits. We are grateful for the service provided by the many men and women that have served our country and strive to serve them, not only with their educational needs, but their spiritual needs as well. This is what one of our Veteran students has to say about his experience with the DCP: “Arizona Christian University (ACU) has been a real blessing to me. I am in the DCP, and the Instructors are excellent! I have learned so much more than I imagined. I am getting a degree from the most caring, well rounded educators possible. They are not only wonderful instructors, and teachers, but they are caring brothers and sisters. I have learned much from them and my classmates. I am both excited, and blessed to be a student here. I am also an Iraq combat Vet, the teachers and campus is Veteran friendly. I drive 200 miles to come to campus and back and it is worth it. I have found that the DCP program is the best educational decision I have ever made. God bless this school and it’s program.” Don Stallings US ARMY retired We are very proud to have Don and all of our Veteran students participating in our program! Community

One of the greatest advantages of a cohort education is the sense of community that develops between students. A cohort is a group of individuals who come together to complete a task, such as completing a degree, for a certain period of time – 20 months here at ACU. When our students come to the first night of class, they realize they are not alone! As they look around the classroom and hear the stories of their fellow students, you can see the tension leave them. What happens quickly is that their shared common goal of completing their degree helps build relationships quickly as students share their stories and dreams. Let me share a story about how community works. One of our new students, Danny, is unable to drive. A few weeks before he started his classes on Thursday nights, I asked one of the classes that meets on Tuesday nights if they would pray for someone to take Danny home to Mesa after class on Thursday. At the end of class, a student named David who lives near the 51 and Cactus came to me and said, “I’ll take Danny home.” I reminded David that his class met on Tuesday night, and it would mean a 45 minute drive, round trip, at 10 p.m. every Thursday night. David said he had talked with his wife, Bonnie, and she agreed that it would be an awesome privilege to serve another student. David and Danny have become good friends, and the DCP community has been strengthened. “Community” was contributed by Dr. James Ellis, Department Chair of the Professional and Adult...

Hear From Our Students

The Degree Completion Program at Arizona Christian University (ACU) has some amazing adults students. I love hearing their stories about how they came to our program to finish their degree or how this program is helping them accomplish a goal they started long ago. Their experience in the Christian community at ACU testifies to the quality of the education and the convenience of our evening classes for adult students. Marcus is in the Business Administration program. This is what he has to say about his classes: “As a 30 something husband with a full time job, there were not many opportunities for me to finish my degree AND stay focused on my family and work. ACU gave me that opportunity and I am blessed to be in their cohort program. In 19 short months, I will walk the aisle with my bachelors degree and I get to learn about some really interesting subjects along the way. I recommend this program to any working person who would like to better themselves with a quality, convenient, Christ-centered education.” — Marcus I can only imagine how proud Marcus’ family is going to be when he walks down that aisle at graduation. In fact, his wife just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.   IS THE DEGREE COMPLETION PROGRAM RIGHT FOR YOU?
